My mom is a health buff who, during my youth, insisted that I follow a healthful diet and eat nutritious meals all the time. She made sure I finish the veggies and fruits on my plate before I could play or do other things I liked doing. Of the many fruits she introduced me to and had me eat until only the seeds were left, pear is one of my favorites. I like pears because they have a mild yet sweet flavor, a creamy texture, and they are really juicy.

How to make Pear Honey

  1. Put chopped pears in a large pot or saucepan. Pour pineapple juice over them to avoid browning. Add and stir in sugar and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Stir periodically to prevent burning. When at full boil, decrease heat to medium and continue cooking until mixture is the same color and texture as that of honey. Keep in mind that the longer you cook, the thicker the mixture becomes. Cook for 2 to 3 hours.
  2. Scoop into hot sterile jars, filling up to ¼ inch of the top. Using clean, damp cloth, wipe the rim of the jars and seal with lids and rings. Process for 10 minutes in a boiling water canner or as recommended by local extension for where you live. Remove, allow to cool, and enjoy.
