Worldwide, apples are considered an important fruit and are loved by many due to their crispy texture, sweet flavor, and nutritional content. They have been cultivated since ancient times and their ancestors can be traced back to the mountains of Central Asia in southern Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and China. Although apple trees have been grown in Asia and Europe for thousands of years, those apples brought to North America by European colonists in the 1600s have adapted well to many US soils and climates.

Unlike the sweet varieties we like to munch on today, the apples harvested by early settlers were bitter, but that was okay since those bitter apples played a big role in colonial society. Apples in those times were used for cooking, and to make cider, which was used as a water substitute due to sanitation concerns.

The apple, although not originally from the United States, is the 3rd most important fruit in the country and is grown in almost every state. How to make Baked Apples

Yields: 6 servings


  • 6 Pittman & Davis Fuji apples – peeled, cored and sliced
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/2 cup whole milk


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 2 quart casserole dish, or coat with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. Place apples in a large bowl. In a small bowl, mix together sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Stir spice mixture into apples until evenly distributed. Fold in raisins and walnuts. Spoon into prepared dish. Pour milk evenly over apple mixture.
  3. Bake in preheated oven for 45 to 60 minutes, or until soft and bubbly. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
