Essential Information about Grapefruit Oil

grapefruit4.jpgGrapefruit oil is extracted from Citrus paradise which is part of the Rutaseae family. You may also know it as shaddock. Grapefruit has many different purposes beyond those of simply controlling cellulite and enhancing your lymphatic system. In fact, grapefruit oil plays an essential part in helping control moods, stimulating digestion and most importantly for many people, clearing congested pores in order to eliminate and prevent acne and other skin eruptions. At one time you can only obtain grapefruit oil by importing it from Asia, but it is now possible to obtain this essential oil in the USA, Brazil and Israel.

The smell of grapefruit oil is sharply refreshing; its color a variance between pale yellow and light ruby. The shelf life of grapefruit oil is rather short at just six months from purchase date, a standard that is consistent with other citrus oils. The glands that contain the grapefruit oil are imbedded deep within the grapefruit peel and only yield a small amount of the essential oil. Cultivators use a cold compression method to extract the grapefruit oil from the peel, yielding .5-1%. Grapefruit oil contains several main chemical components: a-pinene, sabinene, myrcene, limonene, gerahniol, linalool, citronellal, decyl acetate, neryl acetate and perpinen-4-ol. Most people are familiar with the citronellal component which we frequently find in citronella candles, a product we often use outdoors because of its ability to repel insects.

One of the most important properties of grapefruit oil is that it is not toxic, does not usually irritate the skin or cause sensitivity. On the other hand, although grapefruit oil is not considered to be phototoxic, it can irritate your skin if you are in very strong sunlight after you take a grapefruit oil treatment. You can avoid this potential irritation if you avoid sun exposure after grapefruit oil treatment by either staying inside for a while afterward or performing the treatment after the sun goes down or on a day when the sun is not as strong.

Because grapefruit oil is non-toxic you can use it to treat both internal and external problem areas. For instance, it can work well as a diuretic as well as for treatment of other stomach disorders. It can also help boost the immune system and cleanse toxins for the body, one of the major causes of many health problems. Citrus oils such as grapefruit oil are probably the only essential oils that a person can use to treat both internal and external health and beauty issues.
