Why There are More Vitamins in Texas Grapefruit

grapefruit6.jpgJust like most produce, there are so many varieties of grapefruit that unless you are an expert, you probably could not name all of them. Even an expert may have trouble naming all the varieties and strains off the top of their head. But one variety that has become quite famous since it was introduced during the Depression is Texas grapefruit.

The very first Texas grapefruits were the white seeded variety. Soon nature took its course and pink varieties were showing up naturally on the green, waxy-leafed trees that bear Texas grapefruit. After some lab tinkering in a college agricultural program, the bright red and sweet varieties that Texas grapefruit is known for became a part of the grapefruit family.

These red varieties of Texas grapefruit have more vitamin content in them than white or pink grapefruits. That is why Texas grapefruit has more vitamins than any other type of grapefruit. This is a little known fact, but one that could be quite important if you are going to use Texas grapefruit to help supplement the vitamins and minerals that are in your daily diet.

This is especially true if you are trying to get more Vitamin C or potassium into your daily intake. Vitamin C is a great and powerful antioxidant that can help reduce the damage of free radicals and boost your immune system, especially in fall and winter months when colds and flu take course. Texas grapefruit is packed with Vitamin C, moreso than other varieties. In fact, nearly 70% of the recommended daily allowance of Vitamin C can be found in one red Texas grapefruit.

Though many people turn to bananas to get extra potassium in their diet, if you are not in the mood for a banana, a red Texas grapefruit will suffice just fine. This is because one Texas grapefruit has about 250mg of potassium. Potassium can help lower blood pressure, facilitate digestion, and is an electrolyte that helps keep you hydrated. It also helps with skeletal and muscular function and can help prevent muscle cramps, particularly those in the legs (more commonly known as Charlie horses).

Texas grapefruit also has pectin in it full of fiber that can help reduce cholesterol levels and avoid heart disease and stroke. Once again, since Texas grapefruit has higher levels of these nutrients in it than white or pink varieties grown elsewhere, you should try to get more red Texas grapefruit into your diet. If you have a choice between a Texas grapefruit and one grown elsewhere, the choice of which to get if you are serious about your diet is fairly clear. Plus, Texas grapefruit is sweeter and juicier than many other varieties and generally cost about the same.
