The Many Benefits of the Grapefruit

grapefruit6.jpgIf ever you ever had to name a “wonder fruit” it would be a safe bet to call out the grapefruit. A grapefruit is rich in a whole host of essential vitamins and minerals. In fact, one grapefruit alone delivers most of the vitamin C you need for a day. Vitamin C keeps the colds at bay. Instead of popping pills, pop a grapefruit because you'll be getting so many other benefits. Having a glass of grapefruit juice in the morning can go a long way towards preventing constipation for the rest of the day. Just before bedtime, having a grapefruit snack can help you sleep soundly through the night.

What many people don't know is that the skin of a grapefruit is loaded with vitamin P. Vitamin P? Yes, vitamin P. This is needed to support healthy gums and teeth. But don't worry, you don't have to eat the rind to get the vitamin P goodness. Just simmer the skin in water for about twenty minutes then strain and drink it down. Many folks like the tart taste of a grapefruit but that tart taste actually stimulates your stomach's own digestive juices. That's why having grapefruit before dinner is a great way to activate your appetite and smooth out your digestion.

The nutrients in grapefruit has also been shown to help dissolve the build-up of kidney stones, lower cholesterol and act as a preventative measure for some types of cancer. What's great about a grapefruit is that it not just for the inside of your body. Your outside can benefit as well.

Grapefruit can become the basis of a silky soap packed full of fresh citrus aromas and it's simple to make. Next time you finish using a soap dispenser, save it and wash it out. Then combine some unscented liquid soap with one quarter cup of water, one teaspoon of salt and two tablespoons of glycerin. This mixture will become your grapefruit soap foundation. Into this mix, add some grapefruit essential oil. You can find this at any health food store. Keep adding drop by drop until you've created the scent that appeal to you. This then becomes your fresh, organic grapefruit soap with no extra chemicals.

Sticking with the “grapefruit for your skin” theme you can also create a delightful facial cleanser. All you need to do is mix together one shredded grapefruit peel with a half cup of olive oil, two tablespoons of grapefruit juice and a half teaspoon of Borax in a microwavable safe bowl. Heat up the mixture for two minutes. You want it warm not boiling. After that, let it cool down then strain out the grapefruit skin. Once your new cleanser is completely cool, rub it gently into your face, let it set then rinse. You see? Grapefruits aren't just for breakfast!
