Texas Grapefruit Fiber

Medical professionals and dieticians are always telling people to get more fiber into their diet. Fiber is essential to help many bodily functions such as digestion. Digestion is important because any impediment could mean serious or even grave conditions as a result. So of course, fiber should be a part of your diet. But how can you get more in your diet without turning to things like supplements or pills or dull foods that you may not like? Texas grapefruit might just be the answer for you.

Is there actually fiber in Texas grapefruit? The answer is a resounding yes. You can get up to six grams of fiber in just half of a Texas grapefruit. Half of a Texas grapefruit is about the amount of a small navel orange. You must be careful though not to try and get your fiber from grapefruit juice, as there is no actual grapefruit fiber contained in a glass of the juice.

There is no Texas grapefruit fiber in a glass of juice because there is no roughage in it. No pulp or strands of the actual fruit, which is where some of the fiber is derived from. This is why in order to get a good amount of Texas grapefruit fiber, you should eat the entire grapefruit, including the thin white and clear skin around each segment, just like you would eat an orange with the skin still on it. The skin between each segment of the red sweet Texas grapefruit flesh is where the vast majority of the fiber in grapefruit comes from.

If you do not eat the skin of the Texas grapefruit, then you are reducing the amount of fiber by two thirds. While it is true that you will still get up to two full grams of fiber from just grapefruit flesh without the skin, you will get up to six grams when eaten with the skin. If you already have a diet rich in fiber, then eating the Texas grapefruit without the skin like many do is perfectly fine. In this case, the fiber is likely just a small supplement to the fiber that you already have in your diet.

If you are going to use Texas grapefruit fiber as a main source of fiber in your diet, you will either have to eat a whole lot of skinned grapefruit each day, or simply eat it with the skin on. Just as long as you remember that drinking a glass of Texas grapefruit juice will not get you fiber, then you will likely be alright. Also remember that Texas grapefruit is a powerhouse of other nutrients and vitamins. Fiber is only one of the many benefits to getting more of this delicious citrus fruit into your daily diet.
