Celebrating National Pie Day with something truly special! This bright and beautiful Honeybell Citrus Pie is a simple dessert that lets the natural sweetness of fresh citrus shine. Thin slices of juicy Pittman & Davis Honeybells baked into a buttery crust create a pie that’s light, fragrant, and full of sunshine in every bite.

Ingredients

  • 1 prepared pie crust (store-bought or homemade)
  • 3-4 Pittman & Davis Honeybells, thinly sliced
  • ⅓ cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon fresh Honeybell juice
  • 1 teaspoon Honeybell zest
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. Prepare the crust: Place the pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish and press gently into the bottom and sides. Lightly prick the bottom of the crust with a fork to prevent bubbling.
  3. Arrange the Honeybells: Slice Honeybells into thin rounds (about ⅛ inch thick). Remove any seeds. Arrange the slices in overlapping concentric circles inside the crust, working from the outer edge toward the center. You can create beautiful patterns with the circular slices.
  4. Make the glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together sugar, honey, Honeybell juice, and zest until well combined. Drizzle this mixture evenly over the arranged citrus slices.
  5. Bake: Bake for 30-35 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the citrus slices are tender and slightly caramelized at the edges.
  6. Cool and serve: Let the pie cool for 10-15 minutes. Just before serving, dust generously with powdered sugar. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Tips for Success

Why Honeybells? Their exceptional sweetness and low acidity make them perfect for baking. Unlike regular oranges, Honeybells won’t become too tart when baked, and their natural honey-like flavor intensifies beautifully.

Slice uniformly: Try to slice all Honeybells to the same thickness so they cook evenly. A mandoline makes this easier if you have one.

Serving suggestions: This pie is delicious on its own or with a dollop of whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. The light citrus flavor also pairs beautifully with a cup of coffee or tea.

Sweet, simple, and bursting with citrus flavor – the perfect way to celebrate pie day! 🍊
