Healthy Grapefruit Juice Blends to Make at Home

By: Pittman & Davis | On: | Category: DIY Fruit Information

Grapefruit is more than just a healthy food – it’s a superfood, and so is its juice.

What’s So Great About Grapefruit?

Grapefruit is packed with health benefits. Just a single serving gives you 80% of your recommended dietary allowance of vitamin C, an antioxidant that supports the immune system, for the whole day. It’s also full of antioxidants that fight inflammation, help lower your risk of certain cancers, and may even help lower your blood pressure. It’s famously lower in calories than other fruits, packed with fiber, and helps you stay hydrated.

Making Your Own Grapefruit Juice

Speaking of staying hydrated…have you ever considered swapping grapefruit juice for orange juice? Grapefruit juice is a great juice for adults, who may find the sweetness of other fruit juices a bit much. But that doesn’t mean grapefruit juice shares the classic white grapefruit’s bitter reputation…when made with pink or red grapefruit (that contain the antioxidant lycopene), the tartness becomes pleasantly tangy, with just enough sweetness to be refreshing.

The best grapefruit juice is the kind you squeeze yourself, because store-bought juices have preservatives added and may not have the consistency you’d like. If you receive a gift of our Rio Ruby™ Red Grapefruit, turning it into delicious juice is easy!

Naturally sweet and lower in sugar than other juices, our famous Rio Ruby™ Red Grapefruit has plenty of juice that’s delicious on its own, but if it’s still a bit tart for less mature palates, you can easily cut the acidity by adding in juice from Oranges, Tangerines and Apples.

Why You Should Make Your Own, Homemade Grapefruit Juice Blends

There are lots of advantages to making your own juice blends at home: it’s usually a lot cheaper, you can control the amount of sugar (if any) you put in it (very important for diabetics and anyone interested in healthy living), and you can use only the juices you like best in the amounts you want. This is directly opposite to many premade, store-bought juice blends which, in addition to being quite expensive, often just have a splash of the juice or juice varieties touted on their labels and instead are comprised primarily of apple juice (with generous helpings of refined sugar to mask the taste of apple. When you make your own fresh grapefruit juice at home, all you’ll taste is the refreshing taste of grapefruit and whatever juices you may choose to blend with it.

How to Make Your Own Grapefruit Juice Blends

Making your own juice blends at home is easy…here are a few tips to help you get started:

  1. Always use fresh juice. There’s simply no substitute for fresh juice, so make sure you always have plenty of fresh grapefruit, in-season oranges and other fruits on hand. You should also invest in a high-quality juicer and use it to juice all your fruit. Fresh juice is best consumed within 1-3 days when stored in the refrigerator in airtight containers, so make only what you’ll need during that period at a time.
  2. Strain the juice. This step is optional, but if you prefer a smoother juice it’s easy to do. Just place a strainer over a large bowl and pour the blended grapefruit juice into the strainer, then press the remaining pulp through the mesh with a spoon to get the most juice.
  3. Allow the juice to chill thoroughly before drinking. Your juice blend may seem a little bitter if you taste it right after you’ve mixed it up, but don’t try adding any sugar or apple juice until you’ve given it a couple of hours in the fridge so the flavors can blend and intensify. All fruit juices, and especially fruit juice blends, taste best when thoroughly chilled.
  4. Take notes. Whenever you experiment with food, you’ll need to tweak the base recipe to your own taste. Make sure to have a tablet or pen and paper handy while making your own juice blends so you can make a note of how much juice you used, what flavors you added, and how the final result tastes after chilling. You will eventually wind up with a juice blend recipe book geared to your and your family’s personal tastes!

Things to Keep in Mind

Packed with health benefits, grapefruit juice is safe to enjoy every day…if you’re not taking certain medications, that is. While grapefruit has many health benefits, it can interact negatively with some medications. Both grapefruit and grapefruit juice can affect the way some drugs are metabolized, causing them to lose their effectiveness or increase side effects. Check with your doctor before making grapefruit a regular part of your diet if you take medication.

Some people claim grapefruit and grapefruit juice have properties that help you lose weight. There’s no conclusive medical evidence to support this belief, but grapefruit is lower in natural sugar and calories than other fruits and fat- and sodium-free, making it a great addition to any diet plan. Keep in mind, however, that while grapefruit has loads of fiber – which supports digestive heath and makes you feel fuller, so you tend to eat less – like most fruit juices, grapefruit juice is not nearly as good a source of fiber as the fruit’s flesh.

Like most fresh-squeezed fruit juices, grapefruit juice does best when consumed soon after making it and lasts up to three days in the refrigerator. If you want to make a lot, the good news is that grapefruit juice will keep and taste great when kept frozen for up to four months. Thaw it in the fridge before using for best results.
