Essential Oil of Tangerines
Like many other fruits in the citrus family such as oranges and grapefruit, tangerines offer a number of health benefits. The natural oils of these fruits are often sold as extracts in creams, tonics, ointments and vaporizers. Tangerine oils in particular have become a popular seller as consumers are starting to recognize their many benefits.
The most popular use of essential tangerine oils is as a palliative. For years, people with serious conditions like rheumatoid arthritis ingested these oils or consumed the actual fruits because afterward they would experience cessation of their symptoms. What they did not realize of course was that there was a perfectly logical explanation for their good fortune. You see, tangerines contain large amounts of powerful antioxidants that are known as flavonoids. And these flavonoids have anti-inflammatory properties that have been shown to relieve the symptoms of chronic conditions like arthritis.
Tangerine oils have also been used as a remedy for flatulence and constipation. So, it was no surprise when it was discovered that the fruit contains relatively large amounts of fiber. Fiber, as you may know, promotes healthy digestion, which consequently results in regular bowel movements. In recent years, tangerines and their oils have also been used as a topical treatment. Specifically, they have been used to combat certain skin conditions and disorders. Do they work? Well, the reasoning is sound. And the reason that people use these oils on their skin is because they contain high levels of antioxidants.
Antioxidants are helpful little molecules that wage war against free radicals, whose only goal is to destroy healthy cells. By fighting off these harmful free radicals, it is believed that antioxidants actually help reduce the risk of deadly diseases like cancer. It is also frequently posited that antioxidants slow the aging process, since they protect healthy cells and promote repair.
Is this true? At this point, it is difficult to say. But what we can tell you is that tangerine oils and those from other citrus fruits like oranges or lemons are some of the most popular ingredients in expensive, antioxidant-rich skin creams. These topical creams and ointments are commonly used on wrinkles, stretch marks and minor skin discolorations.
Tangerines and their essential oils are also used as a sort of sedative. The belief is that the fruit may actually increase blood circulation and prevent the retention of harmful fluids. This, in turn, may help to relive stress and general anxiety. And, as a welcomed side effect, tangerines may actually promote healthy sleep.
