Daisy's first Ruby Red Grapefruit
One Sunday afternoon, Daisy was walking through the store with her mother. They were looking for fruit to buy when Daisy saw a curiously large and pinkish orange. “Mommy I want that orange”, said the little girl. “That is not an orange Daisy, that is a ruby red grapefruit”, her mother replied. “A what?” Daisy replied. “A ruby red grapefruit” her mother repeated. Struggling with the words, Daisy insisted “I want a ruby red grapefruit!” Throughout the rest of their time in the supermarket Daisy continued to practice her new vocabulary word, ruby red grapefruit and even constructed a little song to remember it.
They returned home and her mother cut the ruby red grapefruit open to show her daughter what awaited inside. She explained that this fruit was very good for her health and that it would help her grow into a strong young woman one day. Her mother placed a quarter of the fruit on a plate for her child but then hesitated. She turned, went to the cupboard and returned with the jar of sugar. She sprinkled some sugar on top of the fruit and passed it to her daughter.
“Why did you put sugar on it mommy?” Daisy asked. “Well, unlike an orange, this fruit is very bitter so I think you will like it more if there is a little sugar to sweeten it my dear.” As her mother explained, Daisy ate the entire piece. Her mother looked down in surprise. “Wow! I guess you like it.” “YUM!” exclaimed Daisy. “I love ruby red grapefruit, and this is good for me? More please!”
She helped her mother slice up the remaining two ruby red grapefruit and sprinkled sugar on them. Stuffed with grapefruit, Daisy insisted they return to the store to buy more, and so they did. The following day, Daisy took a large amount of her now favorite fruit to her class and explained how good ruby red grapefruit was for everyone and how delicious it was. The sweet smell of citrus fruit filled the air as she passed around pieces. She looked around to find that her fellow classmates loved the ruby red grapefruit with sugar on top as well. Proud of herself for sharing such a wonderful treat she exclaimed “Yeah for ruby red grapefruit!” The other kids giggling joined in her celebration and from that day forward, her classmates renamed her Ruby Red. Although she loved her real name Daisy, she was happy to have her new name too.
