If you've ever had a sour grapefruit before you know what its flavor can do. While they can be close to the tartness of a lemon, they can also reward you with being a sweet treat if you know how to look out for the right signs. A good chance of finding the best grapefruit is to select one that is grown in Florida as they have the best citrus growers in the nation.

As you begin your search in your local market, you will need to know a few basics. Unless you want a bitter grapefruit never choose on that is all yellow. This can be difficult if your grocer only buys from one source, but since many of them come from different farms be sure to look through them. You will want to select one that has some reddish blush on it. You will find this to be a delicious piece of fruit.

Now as you pick up the grapefruit how does it feel? The skin should be smooth, firm and rounded. Additionally, the heavier the grapefruit the juicer it will be. This is important when you are selecting a grapefruit for juicing, but even while you are enjoying it, juicer grapefruit just tend to be sweeter as well.

Another thing to take into consideration is the season you are buying the grapefruit as well. The normal season tends to be the Winter months, and during the rest of the year you might end up with citrus fruits that have been frozen or grown a long distance away. Remember, the longer the fruit travels the less fresh it will be.You will also want to make sure the grapefruit is free from imperfections. While there might be subtle bumps on the skin, make sure it is free from brown heavy bumps though, it might be an old grapefruit. While this could be only skin deep, older pieces of fruit become very bitter and unappealing.

One other thing to consider when choosing between oranges, tangerines or grapefruits is whether or not your medication will interact with it. While ideally everyone should be able to enjoy the delicious pieces of fruit, sometimes it just isn't possible while on certain medications. You should check with your doctor to see if these fruits are right for you.Remember the next time you are in the produce aisle to use this information when you are selecting your next grapefruit. Enjoy the flavors it provides and know if you see Florida on the sticker you are receiving the best quality in citrus available.
