America is a nation obsessed with diets and exercise. Each year, we spend an estimated 42 billion dollars on supposedly simple solutions for the battle of the bulge. Unfortunately, most of that money has been spent in vain as Americans remain the fattest people on earth.

Why are Americans so fat? There are a number of reasonable explanations from the fast food industry to increasingly sedentary working conditions. But in this article we want to focus on solutions rather than simple finger pointing.

We also want to discuss healthy foods for a change. No, those low-calorie, artificially created foods you find on supermarket shelves are not healthy. Don't believe us? Take a look at the nutritional information on the back. They offer almost nothing of substance–no vitamins, no minerals.

Fruit, on the other hand, is arguably the healthiest food group on the face of the earth. Not only do they provide huge servings of essential vitamins like A and C, both they are also low-calorie and quite tasty. Why snack on fake health foods?

In the next few paragraphs we are going to discuss the many health benefits of one of nature's healthiest creations, the grapefruit. Documented in 1750 on the island of Barbados, the modern grapefruit is a hybrid fruit, a cross between a Jamaican sweet orange and the ancient pomelo.

The popular breakfast food made its way to America in 1823 where it soon established itself as an exotic novelty in Florida, then Texas. But it was not until the famous “Ruby” variety surfaced in South Texas that the grapefruit became a household name.

At the time, of course, people had no idea just how healthy the grapefruit really was. Not only is it low in calories, fat and cholesterol-free, but it also has copious servings of vitamins A and C. So, why did people buy grapefruit?

Well, as we mentioned the new “Ruby” variety was an instant hit, as it was much sweeter than the original white grapefruit. In time, however, people would discover why they should buy grapefruit.

In addition to the common vitamins and minerals found in citrus fruits, grapefruit is also an excellent source of fiber. Now, all fruits have fiber, but few of them have as much of it as the grapefruit. According to current nutritional information, the average grapefruit has 12 grams of fiber. That's more than a third of recommended daily fiber!

Is this fact alone enough of a reason to buy grapefruit? Well, if you are a person who suffers from high cholesterol or constipation it is. Numerous studies have confirmed that fiber promotes healthy bowl movements and may lower cholesterol levels. Some folks even buy grapefruit because they believe it may lower the risk of certain kinds of cancer.
