A: The ruby red grapefruit tree grows into trees that are 10-13 feet tall but can be pruning 3-4 feet to keep indoors. The red grapefruit looks like the white and pink varieties except the rind is thicker and ripen with a red hue. The red grapefruit has a sweet flavor that is just a bit tart. But the red grapefruit is high in nutrition. Even though the red grapefruit is available year round, they are mostly in season from winter through early spring. And if that is not enough to prove that red grapefruits are healthy for you, red grapefruits are naturally sweet so you don't need to add sugar and there are only 60 calories in ½ a grapefruit. Red grapefruits can be stored at room temperature for up to 7 days or you can refrigerate for up to 2 months. You don't want to eat the grapefruit cold though. Not that it will harm you and if you like it cold, then by all means go right ahead but it is better to take the grapefruit out of the refrigerator for about 2 hours before you eat it.
If you decide to grow grapefruit trees outside of your home, make sure you plant the trees on the south or southeast side of the house. The tree should be at least 12 feet from the house, driveway or walkway so that there is enough room for the tree to grow. You will need to water your red grapefruit trees at least every week to two. You should provide nutrition for the tree by adding about a cup of ammonium sulfate per year of tree age annually. You should not need to prune the tree at all because the tree will develop its shape naturally.
