grapefruit7.jpgThe grapefruit is one of the most nutritious foods on the face of the earth. Chock full of vitamins, antioxidants, and bioflavonoids, it is the original breakfast fruit. But because it is not a hand fruit, grapefruit lovers and dieters alike often have a tough time getting more of it into their diet. In this article we will discuss three easy ways to eat grapefruit every day.

Half a Slice in the Morning

The grapefruit have been a popular breakfast fruit in America for over eighty years. Topped with sugar or an artificial sweetner, fresh is clearly the best and most nutritious of the ways to eat grapefruit. However, the average grapefruit lover makes a few mistakes when they enjoy their morning moiety. First, they often scoop out the fruit flesh, eat it, and discard the rest. But attached to the rind are the walls that separate each section and these walls are mighty healthy. They contain four full grams of dietary fiber.

Fiber is important because it has been shown to improve the health of the human digestive system by encouraging regular bowl movements. Sure, the walls are a bit chewy, but they are eatable. If you discover that you just can't eat them, you will still receive two grams of fiber from the flesh. After the raspberry, it is the fruit with the highest fiber.

A word of advice: only the pink and red varies of grapefruit contain lycopene, a carotene that may reduce the risks of heart disease, macular degeneration, and certain types of cancer. Numerous studies have shown that lycopene is incredibly effective at lowering the incidence of prostate cancer in men.

Juice

After OJ, grapefruit fruit juice is the most popular breakfast juice. Because the US is the world leader in production, it is generally quite cheap and often goes on sale. Though it does not contain dietary fiber, only fresh grapefruit has fiber, it is better for you than orange juice. Not only does it contain the same amount of vitamin C, but pink grapefruit juice has more vitamin A. And because the grapefruit has less sugar, a glass of grapefruit juice has twenty fewer calories than a glass of OJ.

Tests have also shown that the juice contains a flavonoid known as naringenin, which may promote healthy weight loss. It does this by encouraging the liver to burn off excess calories, rather than simply storing them as fat. Naringenin is found in both fresh grapefruit and its juice.

Mix it in a Salad

One of the best ways to eat grapefruit in the afternoon or even at night is to mix fresh segments in a salad. In fact, a grapefruit and avocado salad is a popular menu item at restaurants. These dishes often include a full serving of grapefruit, which is a half. And if you don't enjoy avocados, you don't have to eat them. The grapefruit alone makes for an interesting and exotic dish.
