Ways to Eat Grapefruit for Dessert
When you think of desserts that include fruit, you probably think of things like strawberry shortcake or maybe a kiwi lime sorbet. Raspeberries topping a slice of cheesecake or maybe grapes and pears on top of a nice warm tart is another idea that comes to mind and can make your mouth water. Most likely, one of the last fruits you would think of would be the humble grapefruit. But believe it or not, there are plenty of great ways to eat grapefruit that are great for an after dinner treat. Some of the ways to eat grapefruit for dessert may surprise you, but each one is tasty and delicious.
Try using some grapefruit in a syrup topping for a crème cake. This may seem crazy at first, but think about it–lemon poppy syrup is often used as a topping for crème cakes, so there is a precedent. Add some grapefruit juice and a little zest from the peel and all the sudden you have a citrusy kick to a traditional after dinner cake. This is a great way to eat grapefruit for dessert, or even as breakfast in the morning with your coffee.
If you do not want all the fat and sugar that comes with a crème cake, then another great way to use grapefruit for dessert is to put it in a sorbet. Sorbets come in all colors and flavors, so why not grapefruit? It makes for a tangy and delicious treat, and you can also add it to existing sorbet flavors to give it a new twist. It is low in fat and sugar substitutes can be used to sweeten it up.
You can also try reducing grapefruit juice down to a syrup and use it on top of all kinds of desserts. Try a little reduced grapefruit juice on a slice of vanilla cake or maybe with a warm fruit compote. This is a simple and warm way to eat grapefruit that is completely different from the usual cold desserts that you would associate with citrus or any kind, including grapefruit.
A wise man once said that there is beauty in simplicity, and when it comes to dessert they are often right. If you cooked a really big meal that took all day to make, then you might not have time for a big display for dessert. So the simplest way to eat grapefruit is by itself, or with a touch of sweetener. Most might add sugar as a way to eat grapefruit, but try some non traditional sweeteners instead like honey, agave nectar or even some stevia. Serve with toasted nuts and some cheese and you have yourself an impressive dessert spread without the impressive effort.
