Texas Grapefruit for Dessert
An image of Texas grapefruit probably makes one think of things like a cold glass of juice in the morning or a refreshing snack between meals. Rarely, if ever, does the image of Texas grapefruit make someone think of dessert or anything sweet in general. But people in Texas for years have been making desserts with Texas grapefruit, and it is about time that the rest of the country and world find out about them.
A very popular dessert in the fall and winter, when Texas grapefruit season is at the peak, is Texas grapefruit pie. That’s right, a pie, just like you would make a strawberry or peach pie. In fact, a Texas grapefruit pie has a lot in common with a strawberry pie. In fact, most recipes that you will find call for strawberry glaze and whipped cream on top, encased in a prepared pie crust. The only difference is that the fruit that makes up the bulk of the pie will be Texas grapefruit instead of strawberries. The sweetness of the glaze and whipped cream makes it a great treat for dessert or even for a sweet treat with your coffee in the morning.
Another way to turn Texas grapefruit into a sweet treat is to cut it in half and sprinkle it with some kind of sweetener. The sweetener is up to you and should be something that is healthy for you as a part of your regular diet. Whether that is pure cane sugar, honey, nectar, aspartame, splenda or anything else is at your discretion. If you do happen to go for the pure cane sugar, you can put the halved Texas grapefruit sprinkled with sugar under a broiler and create a crispy crust that is fun to break into and even better to taste and eat.
A nice slice of cheesecake either made with or topped with a peeled and sweetened Texas grapefruit is another culinary delight for your sweet tooth. Either add small pieces of sweetened Texas grapefruit to the cheesecake batter before you cook or let it set, or top it right before serving. You can sweeten the Texas grapefruit in much the same way as any other, by spreading some sugar on it (or any other sweetener that is appropriate for you) and letting it sit in the fridge for a few hours. The sugar reacts with the natural sweetness of the grapefruit and creates a juicy sweet treat that lends itself well to the creaminess of the cheesecake.
Of course, there are other ways to get your sweet fix using Texas grapefruit. All you have to do is think of something you love and try to incorporate the fruit into it. Do not be afraid to try something that sounds odd at first, as Texas grapefruit pie probably sounded outrageous when it was first made but now is a winter staple in many homes.
