Get Some Navel Oranges in Your Diet

oranges13.jpgThere are a whole lot of ways that you can get navel oranges into your diet. The most obvious, of course, would be through orange juice. Whether you buy it in your grocer case or if you freshly squeeze your own, orange juice has a bevy of vitamins and minerals and can give you a nice boost. But whether you realize it or not, there are also a lot of other ways to get navel oranges that are both savory and sweet. Some of them may even seem a bit out of left field, but what is life is you do not take some chances from time to time?

Besides the juice that we have already discussed, there is one more obvious way to get navel oranges into your diet. That would be of course to eat whole navel oranges. The reason we are going to discuss this right here is because there are a few different ways to eat navel oranges whole, and which way you choose to do it can have an effect on how much nutritional benefit you get out of your navel oranges. If you eat your navel oranges with the thin skin surrounding each piece, then you are getting the maximum amount of fiber out of your orange (unless you eat the peel, which some people do). If you take each segment out of the thin layer of skin, then you are taking away most of the added benefit of fiber.

If you like to eat your navel oranges whole, try something different by adding some honey or sugar on top. Even agave nectar or stevia or honey will work. Or, go really nuts and throw some sugar on top of your navel oranges and then throw them under the broiler. This will produce a thin crust that is fun to eat and enhances the sweetness of the navel oranges.

Another way that is not obvious to eat navel oranges is by making desserts out of them. A navel oranges pie, similar to the grapefruit pies made at Christmas time in Texas is a good way to start. Or, add the peeled and skinned segments of navel oranges to the top of a cheesecake. You can also add some to the cheese mixture and let it set to make a real orange cheesecake instead of a fake one with food dye and artificial flavors, like you might find in stores or restaurants.

Since navel oranges are available in the winter months, try putting them on a salad for a spring burst in the cold. Or, juice the navel oranges and make vinaigrette that can be used to marinade meats, vegetables or to put on a salad. The possibilities are endless, the only limit is your imagination.
